A hot kitchen, country setting, layers of frosting and ambitious cakes piled high on wooden tables – you could cut the tension with, well, a palette knife. This was the scene inside our rustic farm shed – or stoor – on Twee Jonge Gezellen in Tulbagh during the shooting of Koekedoor Kombuis Season 1.
Koekedoor Kombuis is the sweet spin-off of popular Afrikaans cooking series, Kokkedoor. For the baking version, our shed was transformed into an enchanting demo kitchen, complete with regular bursts of white clouds of flour. Quite a few bottles of Krone MCC were popped – we were, after all, the proud sponsors. And quite a few more were popped when the winner was crowned! After weeks of tension and drama – like only high-end baking can create – Mareli Visser of Douglas in the Northern Cape was crowned the winner, while Martjie Malan was awarded runner-up.
Auditions for Season 2 closed on 7 August 2015. Look out for the first episode of the new season on Kyknet, DSTV, in 2016.
